Lucas trial on hold for 2 weeks
The trial of Donthe Lucas, who is charged in the death of his pregnant girlfriend, Kelsie Schelling, was put on hold for two weeks after someone in the courtroom tested positive for COVID-19.
The delay was announced Wednesday, Feb. 10, but no details were provided about who tested positive other than that the person had been in court for proceedings that week. Local health officials recommended the court impose a 14-day quarantine.
Access to the courtroom has been limited during the trial, with only members of the Lucas and Schelling families and about three members of the public allowed inside. The delay was announced on what was supposed to be the sixth day of the trial.
Lucas is charged with murder in the death of Schelling, who grew up in Holyoke. She was last seen in February 2013 headed from her home in Denver to Pueblo to talk to Lucas about her pregnancy. She is presumed to be dead, but her body has not been found.
