Track team off to a running start in later-than-usual season
After the 2020 track and field season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Holyoke athletes and coaches are thankful to be able to compete this year.
“I’m just happy to have a season,” said head coach Corey Koberstein, noting that both the boys and girls teams had plans to win state last year.
The team has been practicing in the off season and patiently waiting for the first official day of practice Monday, April 26.
Track and field, which is technically part of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s season D, started much later than it normally does. Holyoke’s first meet is next Tuesday, May 4, and the season won’t wrap up until well into the summer break at the state tournament June 24-26 at JeffCo in Lakewood.
This year, instead of worrying about the snow, they’ll be worrying about the heat, said Koberstein.
It’s kind of like a normal track schedule — everything ends up getting switched around anyway, he said with a grin, noting that some of the meets on Holyoke’s schedule are a bit up in the air right now.
The Holyoke Invite is scheduled for Thursday, May 27, at 9 a.m.
