Dragon baseball back on diamond
With no spring sports last year due to the pandemic, HHS baseball players are ready to take the field in 2021.
Coach Sherman Kage said it’s going to be like hitting the reset button, and the team will work on the basics of offense and defense as well as rebuilding the team’s foundation.
He went on to say that the cancellation of last season put everyone behind the eight ball, but pointed out that every team is in the same boat.
The season has 15 games scheduled instead of the usual 23, and it runs into June this year.
Kage said the season running so late this year could have led to a decline in the number of kids playing. With fewer kids with baseball experience, he said he’s really looking for everyone to step up and work together to become a team.
“Our challenge is going to be the lack of knowledge of the game,” he said. “Some know it well; others are starting from scratch.”
He said he and coaches Jimmy French and Marcus Kammer will be stressing the fundamentals and baseball IQ, and they’ll be looking for those team members who have played before to step up and be leaders.
“I’m looking forward to building the foundation, setting the standard and rebuilding Dragon baseball,” Kage said, adding that he hopes to take that rebuilt foundation and set the standard for the future.
