Dragon football team falls to Florence for first loss of season

Holyoke football suffered its first loss of the season 36-15 in Florence on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Florence had not allowed any points all season going into the game, but that changed in the first quarter when the Dragons scored a touchdown. The Huskies answered with two first-quarter touchdowns of their own to take the lead.

Holyoke regained the lead with a touchdown and a two-point conversion before halftime, but Florence scored three touchdowns in the second half for the 36-15 win.

“It was one of those games where we did a lot of things really well, but we made too many mistakes to win against a top-10 team,” coach Dusty Sprague said. Florence was ranked No. 3 in class 1A going into the game, and Holyoke was No. 4.

Sprague said the team will focus on technique and fundamentals moving forward.

“They battled really hard and played really hard but made some mistakes,” Sprague said, adding that they will build on the positives from the game and get better on the negatives.
