Five Years Ago — Sept. 29, 2016

Holyoke Police Department brought its case for a more competitive starting wage to the city council for the second straight meeting on Sept. 20. After seeking to approve a fifth officer at the Sept. 6 council meeting, the department is now looking to fill a position after former officer Daniel Coontz resigned Sept. 7.

The normal route of the homecoming parade has been reversed. On Friday, the parade will begin at the intersection of Interocean Avenue and Carnahan Street and will travel south on Interocean Avenue to Johnson Street. This will allow elementary students and residents of Regent Park & Carriage House to attend the pep rally at Holyoke City Park.

 

Ten Years Ago — Sept. 29, 2011

Council member Jessica Cumming resigned her seat on the Holyoke City Council Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Holyoke School Board president Dan Kafka was recently honored by the Colorado Association of School Boards when he was presented the McGuffey Award for his service. The CASB McGuffey Award is designed to honor that unique board member who brings to his/her board work both the head and the heart of committed and passionate service.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago — Oct. 3, 1996

Two licensed physical therapists, Morag Wood and Per-Magnus Persson, have joined the staff at Physical Therapy Clinic of Holyoke. Wood is originally from Scotland, and Persson is a native of Sweden.

For 100 years, the U.S. Postal Service has provided Rural Free Delivery mail service to the country. To celebrate, the Holyoke Post Office held an open house on the 100th anniversary, Oct. 1.

Pix Super Foods is the new name of the Holyoke grocery store located at 128 S. Campbell Ave. Formerly Shop-All Inc. Super Foods, the business was purchased Oct. 2 by Bruce and Barbara Morris and Jim and Carolyn Fisher from Jim Vincent of Yuma.

 

Fifty Years Ago — Sept. 30, 1971

Holyoke High School principal Max Bernard has announced that Nolan Oltjenbruns, a member of the senior class and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Oltjenbruns, Amherst, has been named a semifinalist in the 1971-72 National Merit Scholarship program.

A new hobby craft shop will open in the basement of Sumpter’s Variety Store and will feature free lessons in crochet and knitting. It can also be used by hobby craft clubs or individuals and for painting.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago — Oct. 3, 1946

There being no music dealer in the area between North Platte, Nebraska, and Denver, Channer’s Store has established a music department and plans to handle pianos, sheet music and perhaps band instruments when they are available.

An urgent call is issued for any and all musical instruments used in a band, according to Clarence P. Stout, high and grade school music instructor.
