At the Dec. 27 East Phillips County Hospital District Board meeting, CEO Trampas Hutches announced that MMH will soon have its own in-house optometrist, Dr. Tim Meyer.
With a hardworking trio sharing the titles of cook, server and manager, Nohemi’s Mexican Grill opened for business at 242 W. Denver St. in Holyoke on Dec. 21. Aisha Moreno, Francisco Rodriguez and Nohemi Hernandez are the team behind Holyoke’s latest Mexican cuisine.
A band with Holyoke connections, the Okee Dokee Brothers, has been nominated for another Best Children’s Album Grammy Award with the latest album, “Saddle Up,” the third installment in the duo’s adventure album series.

Melissa Memorial Hospital administrator John Ayoub reported during the East Phillips County Hospital District’s regular meeting on Dec. 27 that a contract had been signed with family nurse practitioner Deaun Carpenter of Imperial, Nebraska. Carpenter will begin an orientation week Jan. 23 and will start seeing patients once orientation is complete. Ayoub also reported that Dr. Rick Amesquita has taken another job and will be leaving his duties in Holyoke sometime in January.
A recently approved House district map has led State Rep. Jon Becker (R-Fort Morgan) to make the tough decision to step down and allow State Rep. Jerry Sonnenberg (R-Sterling) to run for reelection in the newly reapportioned 65th House district. The new 65th district encompasses Cheyenne, Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick and Yuma counties, drawing Becker and Sonnenberg into the same district.
Stock car races at Phillips County Raceway might include alcohol in 2012, reported Phillips County commissioners at their Dec. 30 meeting. They have been working with the county fair board on the idea of serving alcohol at the races and have approved their idea of a beer garden. The plan still needs to go through the city of Holyoke for approval.

New Year’s Eve Dinner Playhouse participants rang in the new year with “A Black & White Affair” as they enjoyed an evening of good food, good theater, good music and fun — all in support of the Peerless Center.
At the upcoming Jan. 16-17 Colorado Wildlife Commission meeting, the Wildlife Commission will vote on a proposal to set aside 15% of the limited antlerless deer and elk licenses for youth only.

Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Smythe this week announce the appointment of Gerald “Bud” Brewer as manager of Smythe’s Department Store. Brewer operated Bud’s Barber Shop from February 1959 until March 1970 in the building now occupied by the Marlin Smith barbershop. He then started working for Smythe as assistant manager. Mr. and Mrs. Smythe have operated the store since May 1960. Before that time, Mr. Smythe was manager of the J.C. Penney store in the same location.
Starting Jan. 1, a new U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation goes into effect requiring that prescription eyeglass lenses and sunglass lenses (whether prescription or not) be “impact-resistant” — able to take a sharp bump without breaking.
Great Western Sugar Company, Sterling, announced recently that Glen Zemanek has been transferred to the Mitchell, Nebraska, factory as agriculturist. Replacing Zemanek will be Gordon “Gordy” Friede. He comes to the Holyoke area after many years’ experience in the Ovid factory district.

At the annual meeting of the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department, which was held last Thursday night in the firemen’s club rooms, D.D. Patrick was elected chief for the next year. During 1946, there were 50 fire alarms turned in, 40 of those being country fires and the other 10 town calls.
Two buses have been taken off the Holyoke run of the Burlington Trailways System, effective Jan. 6. Two buses daily each direction now serve Holyoke. The westbound buses leave at 4:19 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., and the eastbound buses leave at 1:03 p.m. and 6:45 a.m.
