Dragon basketball nets 2 more wins last week

Dragon basketball picked up two wins last week, including a league win at Sedgwick County on Friday, Jan. 28, by a score of 62-41. Prior to that, Holyoke beat Perkins County, Nebraska, on the home court 71-56 on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Coach Colbey Stumpf was happy to point out that the Dragons are improving at playing at a high level in all four quarters, as avoiding a down quarter is something they’ve been working on.

“We’re getting to be more consistent throughout all four quarters,” he said. “We’re not letting our highs get too high or our lows get too low.”

He said the Dragons bounced back really well against Perkins County after their loss to Limon, which proves that loss is behind them.

“We’re in the midst of fixing the things we need to fix,” he said. “Our players are feeling confident in their shooting ability.”

Stumpf again pointed to consistency as being very important in heading into the upcoming games with Yuma and Merino, adding that if they can do that and avoid down quarters, he’s confident they’ll come away with two more wins.

The Dragons got out to a quick 18-11 lead in the first quarter and remained in control throughout the game. With the help of 11 second-quarter points from Cash Weber and nine from Ethan Johnson, the Dragons led 42-26 at halftime.

Holyoke was good for four 3-pointers in the third quarter, outscoring the Plainsmen 19-13. Perkins County scored 17 in the final frame to Holyoke’s 10 as the Dragons began to rest their starters, but it was not enough to stop Holyoke’s 71-56 win.

Johnson led Holyoke scorers with 29 points on four 2-pointers, six 3s and three free throws. Weber had a career-high 21 points, including four 2s, four 3s and one free throw.

Miles Sprague led in total rebounds with six. Wyatt Sprague and Michel Perez had five apiece. Perez also blocked one shot.

Wyatt Sprague had the most assists with five, and Weber and Miles Sprague each had three.
