Dragons take No. 1 Yuma to final seconds in exciting Friday night home game
Holyoke boys basketball kept Dragon fans on the edge of their seats Friday night, Feb. 4, putting on a show against No. 1 Yuma in a game that wasn’t decided until the final seconds.
Tied at 37 with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter, Yuma scored two to take the lead with 40 seconds remaining.
Wyatt Sprague tied the game at 39, and Yuma took a timeout with 13 seconds left. Yuma inbounded and scored what was ultimately the game-winning basket with just under three seconds left, and the Dragons were defeated 41-39.
Despite losing a second game Saturday, Feb. 5, to Merino 54-50, coach Colbey Stumpf said he was happy with how the Dragons played.
“I thought they played great,” he said. “The boys showed they were ready and played strong.”
He pointed out that last time Holyoke played Yuma, the Dragons were outscored 30-8 in the first quarter. This time, he said they did a good job performing well right out of the gate.
