Five Years Ago

A tip to the Pueblo Police Department brought a glimmer of hope Friday, April 14, to those following the case of Kelsie Schelling’s February 2013 disappearance. Detectives uncovered new, undisclosed evidence while excavating the backyard of Donthe Lucas’ former residence, according to KKTV 11 News and the “Help Find Kelsie” Facebook page.

Over 1,000 people were in attendance at a fire relief benefit at the Haxtun Fire Hall on April 15, and silent auctions brought in over $150,000 that night. The fundraising event was planned to provide relief to those who suffered losses in the March 6-8 wildfire in Logan and Phillips counties and to recognize firefighters who worked so hard to protect the community and control the blaze.

 

Ten Years Ago

April 19, 2012

Phillips County Museum is sponsoring “Home Sweet Home,” where participants can experience old-fashioned domestic chores this Friday night, April 20.

Following debt restructuring at Ballyneal Golf Course in early March, the new company is encouraged by membership potential and looks forward to opening the golf season on May 22.

Dusty McConnell and Reid Baumgartner, both of Holyoke, took home the top prize in the annual Southwest Ike’s Catfish Tourney held April 7 at Enders Lake in Enders, Nebraska, hauling in 23 pounds, 2 ounces of catfish — 11 pounds more than the second-place team.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 24, 1997

Misty Hielscher has opened her own business, Hielscher Drafting and Design. In her new business venture, she offers commercial, residential, remodeling, house plans, civil, mechanical, architectural and electrical plans.

One Stop Wedding Shop is the name of Heidi Spitz’s business venture which is just getting off the ground. As a wedding coordinator, Spitz offers knowledgeable assistance for these special events.

Just as things started to heat up for the Holyoke planning commission, it had a major turnover in board members. In the past few weeks, members with a combined total of 87 years experience resigned.

 

Fifty Years Ago

April 20, 1972

Nolan Oltjenbruns was one of 40 Colorado high school seniors to be awarded a scholarship by the Boettcher Foundation. The 40 scholars were selected from 825 applicants. The scholarship consists of full tuition to any accredited college or university within the state, fees and book allowance, and a $1,000 annual stipend for living expenses.

Eight thousand acres of sugar beets have been planted to date in Phillips County, with approximately 3,500 acres emerged.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

April 24, 1947

The board of the town of Holyoke, at its regular meeting April 21, unanimously voted to contact several engineers and employ one to make a survey and draw up plans and specifications for the proposed extension of the sewer lines into the Belmont addition of Holyoke and also the extension of the lines into the west part of town known as West Holyoke.

An assembly featuring Bob Wood, chalk-talk artist, was greatly enjoyed by the high school and grade school students April 15. Students were amazed when he wrote complicated words upside-down and backward at the same rate of speed as his usual handwriting. He drew many beautiful pictures with swift, skillful strokes of colored chalk while chanting appropriate verses.
