A need for Spanish translating within the police department led the Holyoke City Council to approve the future use of Telelanguage services at its May 2 meeting. Telelanguage provides immediate interpretation over the phone for its customers.

Holyoke Marketplace opened its new deli department May 1, expanding the grab-and-go meal options to include fried chicken and lunch and dinner specials at the local grocery store in the space previously occupied by Bemis Drug.

Burlap and Lace, an open-air vintage, antique and artisan market and tag sale, is set for May 12 at 106 S. Reynolds Ave. Vendors will have everything from tasty treats to handmade treasures to vintage items.

Glen McCallum recently opened the doors of his newly constructed building north of Holyoke on Highway 385. He began offering on-site diesel repair services in May 2010, and with the completion of his building he was able to add two new diesel mechanics to Glen’s Diesel Repair.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 15, 1997

Remodeling and other major changes provide a whole new look and focus at Olde Holyoke Square since Paul and Laura Krogmeier purchased the building at 221 N. Interocean Ave. from Nelda O’Neal last December. The Krogmeiers’ Inklings Book Store has been the building’s lone inhabitant, but this month Carsons Craft Depot relocated to the building, and Phillips County Family Education Services will be based there starting Sept. 1.

Armando Hernandez faces the possibility of life imprisonment or death after being arrested on a warrant issued in connection with a double homicide in Phillips County. Investigation continues into the death of two men whose bodies were discovered along Highway 59 north of Haxtun on May 7.

Nancy and Jack Anderson of Venango, Nebraska, recently opened a restaurant in their community. The Home Cafe, formerly known as Ethel’s Cafe, began operation on April 28.

Holyoke PEO Chapter BM celebrated its 75th anniversary with a birthday dinner prior to the May 8 meeting. The local chapter was officially organized on May 25, 1922.

 

Fifty Years Ago

May 11, 1972

The walk for hunger held last Saturday and Sunday in Phillips County raised $3,976.40, and with a few cash donations that are still expected, the total should be well over $4,000 on the walk from Paoli to Holyoke and Haxtun.

A play entitled “On the Fence” was presented April 25-26 by the Holyoke sixth grade language arts classes under the direction of class instructor Mrs. Rex Douglass.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

May 15, 1947

A nationwide search to find the oldest Chevrolet truck still in active service in the United States was announced today by J.W. Burke, manager, commercial and truck department, Chevrolet Motor Division, General Motors Corporation. Owner of the oldest vehicle will be presented with a new truck from the “Advance-Design” line of trucks which will be introduced by Chevrolet in the near future.

Governor Knous has rescinded the order issued during the war that allowed trucks to be overloaded. From now on they must conform to the law of the state that says how much weight can be placed on a truck according to its wheel base. During the war and since, there has been no limit to the weight that has been placed on trucks. There are many who feel that many of the bad places in the highways came from that overloading.
