Holyoke School District Re-1J has been accepted to participate in a pilot program for a new accountability system called Student-Centered Accountability Project.

Kaylee Ham recently returned from a semester abroad at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

Kyla Steinman spent June 8-25 on a mission trip to Northern Ireland with 21 other students from Colorado Christian University.

Melissa Memorial Hospital Foundation has hired Jessica Johnson to fill the vacant executive director position, which opened up when Cherrie Brown announced her resignation at the beginning of this year.

Extremely dry conditions have caused a jump in corn prices over the last month or so. With much of the country experiencing drier than normal conditions, farmers are bracing for a down year with respect to corn harvest.

Aug. 14, 1997

An escape attempt has led to six additional charges brought against Armando Hernandez, aka John Doe, a suspect in a Phillips County double homicide in May. On Aug. 4, Doe attempted an escape from the Logan County Jail using a homemade knife and physical force.

The debut of the Phillips County Fair car show on Saturday, Aug. 2, could certainly be considered a success. Best of show honors went to Roger and Sharon Maag of Joes for their 1957 Chevrolet Nomad.

Unusually wet weather in the area continued over the past week. The Frenchman Creek was filled nearly to capacity again due to water flowing in from the west. Most residents have had more than enough moisture for one summer as flood conditions have been experienced in numerous parts of Colorado.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Aug. 10, 1972

Last Sunday afternoon a U.S. Army hospital helicopter landed at the Holyoke airport to pick up a migrant worker who recently suffered a heart attack and transferred him to Colorado General Hospital in Denver for further treatment.

Three test wells for oil and gas are being drilled in the area by Allison Drilling Co. The first well is being drilled on the Harvey McCune land northeast of Amherst. The other two wells will be drilled on the Alma Peters land and Dudden land in Sedgwick County.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Aug. 14, 1947

The J.C. Penney Co. store of Holyoke will sponsor a pet parade and free show at the Peerless Theatre, Wednesday, Aug. 20. The parade down Interocean Avenue will start in front of The Burge Hotel at 9 a.m. Prizes being offered for the pet parade are for best-decorated doll buggy, best-decorated tricycle, best-decorated bicycle, best-decorated scooter, best-looking dog, ugliest mutt, cleverest animal entry, best-looking saddle pony and most unusual entry.

We learn from the Grand Junction Sentinel that the chemicals in the human body today, if captured and placed in bottles, would sell for $31.04. Ten years ago, the same chemicals would only have brought 98 cents on the open market. No wonder men’s hats and ladies’ girdles must be made larger.

The revenue department of Colorado has issued a bulletin to the highway patrol and all county clerks relative to the licensing of trailers. The bulletin states that all trailers, semitrailers and trailer coaches intended to be operated upon any highway in the state must be titled and licensed the same as any passenger car or truck, the only exception being that a trailer used infrequently upon the highways in the furtherance of farming activities of the owner need not be licensed or titled.
