Work has already begun for Erin Hekmatpour, M.D., who is now seeing patients at Family Practice of Holyoke. Dr. Erin, as she’s known by patients, will be working in the clinic for the next three months through Docs Who Care, which fills short-term needs in rural facilities like MMH.

Holyoke’s Graeme Smith can now call himself a citizen of the United States. He was born in New Zealand and lived there for 46 years before moving to Holyoke with his wife, Dolly, 21 years ago.

 

Ten Years Ago

April 25, 2013

More than a dozen citizens representing various agencies in Phillips County met April 18 to address gaps in communication channels and possible additions to protocols regarding emergency response procedures. The April 8 spring storm was the wake-up call that began the process of evaluating what information is necessary in an emergency.

Formerly under the name of Sellstate Realty, Jeff and Olga Sullivan have branched out to form their own business, Sully Team Realty LLC, which became official April 16.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 30, 1998

The city of Holyoke has once again made a request for the relocation of a well, and once again, the fate of that request rests primarily in the hands of the Frenchman Groundwater Management District.

Two and a half years ago, local Tony Homburg began restoring a children’s mural in Heginbotham Library. The mural was painted by a Dutch artist when the Heginbotham home was built in 1918-1920. Homburg, a Dutch artist himself, said the damage was so extensive that it was very tricky to work with.

 

Fifty Years Ago

April 26, 1973

Myrle Foster is celebrating 50 years of cutting hair in Holyoke. He arrived in Holyoke on April 28, 1923, via Burlington railroad from Lynch, Nebraska, and by 4 p.m. that day was cutting hair in the barber shop owned then by Theo C. Steingeweg.

Field preparation and spring planting continued to be hampered by more moisture during the past week. Farmers have been busy fertilizing and were able to do some spring plowing during the past week, but with the new moisture that moved into the area Tuesday and then turned to snow Wednesday, further field work has come to a standstill for the present.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

April 29, 1948

The service station at Paoli, operated by Emil Fisbeck, and the Scholl Oil station were broken into sometime Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning of this week. Investigation at both stations by Sheriff H.M. Clements revealed that nothing was missing from either place.

In cooperation with the department of public health and the Phillips County medical association, the public schools of Phillips County offered a program of immunization for preschool and school children and any interested adults on April 27 at the courthouse. Over 500 shots were given during the day: 349 smallpox, 140 diphtheria, and 35 triple shots of diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.

Sales taxes in American cities alone last year totaled over $90 million. They are expected to touch the $100 million mark this year. Cities in New York collected $50 million, and in California $25 million.
