Phillips County commissioners meeting touches on physical health, potential wedding venue, dementia care

Briefings for the Phillips County Board of County Commissioners began on Friday, April 28, with a request by Krista Doble, chief human resources officer for Melissa Memorial Hospital, in regard to the hospital’s upcoming National Senior Health & Fitness Day event. Health & Fitness Day encourages physical activity among seniors and is set to be celebrated Wednesday, May 31, at Homesteaders’ Park north of Holyoke.

Doble requested commissioners waive the rental fee for the hospital’s use of the park; Commissioner Tom Timm and Commissioner Chair Garold Roberts approved and seconded a motion approving that request for “all features.” Commissioner Terry Hofmeister, then engaged in political action at the Colorado General Assembly, was not present at the meeting.

“It’s a great event,” Roberts said of Health & Fitness Day. “That’s what that place is for, right?”

According to Doble, a physical therapist from Melissa Memorial would like to bring in the seniors, who can then learn “different exercises [and] activities.”

“It would be Phillips County-wide,” she continued, “and we would invite anyone who is willing to attend.”

The day also will include a bike safety event at the hospital for kids, Doble said, organized by its Emergency Medical Services personnel.

“We give out free helmets to all children,” she said.

Further groups scheduled to arrive, she continued, include Holyoke Fire Department and Police Department.
