Holyoke celebrated its 125th anniversary on April 24 with a melodrama, “Shawnee Lou, the Prairie’s Purest Dressmaker,” at the HHS auditorium.

Holyoke Police Chief Barry Winckler recently announced his resignation, effective May 15. He has been hired as an officer for the Littleton Police Department.
Phillips County is a few steps closer to being placed in the National Flood Insurance Program, which means residents are closer to being able to purchase flood insurance. A draft Floodplain Regulation has been recommended for adoption by the county commissioners, and a public hearing on the proposed regulation has been set for June 15.
Holyoke’s downtown area was partially revitalized last week with the installation of new banners and the placement of new trash receptacles.

Rod Paul, chairman of the board of First National Bank in Brush, announced today that a group of bankers has purchased Holyoke Bank and Trust Co. and Holyoke Agency Inc.
Additional moisture in the form of rain mixed with snow, amounting to 1.89 inches, that moved into the area the past week has caused field preparation to come to a complete standstill.
Schneider Feed & Seed, Paoli, has been appointed the authorized Ritemix “Moneymaker” feed dealer for this area.

Funeral services were held in Haxtun Tuesday for Harold Jesson and Harold Cheney. The two young men were killed Sunday morning when their light plane crashed into a ravine in El Paso County. They left Holyoke about 6:45 a.m. Sunday, en route to Florence to attend a Flying Farmers breakfast.
At the school election, which was held May 3, 148 voters turned out to elect a treasurer for District No. 39. The largest number of voters that has ever turned out at a school election were present. Theo F. Fiedler received 93 votes, and Earl Rudder received 55.
The nation’s memorial to World War II dead — the Gold Star Lapel Button — will be ready for distribution after June 1, 1948, to the next of kin of men and women of all Armed Services who died for their country at home and abroad. The authority for this recognition came in Public Law No. 306, enacted by the 80th Congress.
Colorado Day, Aug. 1, will be observed by the naming of one of her mountain peaks after Edward John Wilcox, who built the Argentine Railroad in 1917. The peak which will be named is the one up which the railroad was built, 8 miles west of Georgetown.
The Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce has started a movement to bring the remains of Zebulon Pike to that city and have him buried in a crypt on top of the peak that bears his name. They have in mind making it a shrine something like the Buffalo Bill shrine on top of Lookout Mountain.
