Betty Smith

    Carolyn “Betty” Smith, age 75, was born Oct. 4, 1942, in Helena, Alabama, the 11th child of John and Ethel (Brown) Martin. She died Jan. 23, 2018, at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke.
    Betty was married to Gerald Smith, and to this union two children were born: daughter Susan and son John. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri, for approximately 35 years. She worked as a union representative in Kansas City, later moving to Haigler, Nebraska, for a short time as a home caretaker.
    In 2000, she moved to Holyoke, where she worked as a substitute teacher for the Holyoke School District. She also worked at Golden Plains Motel for a time. She loved her garden, flowers and animals.
    Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ethel; two brothers, John Jr. and James; three sisters, Lucille, Dorothy and Faye; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sid Smith, Wendel Smith and wife Ramona, Stanton Smith and wife Dorothy, Lois Lakey and husband Bobbie, and Elizabeth Myer and husband Gerald.
    She is survived by her husband, Gerald; daughter, Susan Walker and husband Steve; son, John Smith; two stepdaughters, Debbie Tidwell and husband Rusty and Verna MacQueen and husband John; three brothers, Jack Martin and wife Marie, Calvin Martin and Ruel Martin; two sisters, Bobby Shifflet and Eva May Nix; one brother-in-law, Robert Smith and wife Sharon; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Bradford and husband Walter, Patricia Warren and husband Leonard, and Bonnie Smith; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.
    No services and cremation were requested. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at the Haigler Cemetery.
    Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home in Wray is in charge of arrangements.
