BJ Johnston

William Clarence “BJ” Johnston, 78, of Holyoke died Aug. 19, 2022. He was born Aug. 4, 1944, in Holyoke to Clarence Wayne and Ellen Mae (Struckmeyer) Johnston.

William was known to most as BJ. He attended Holyoke schools, graduating in 1962. He then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, completing four years, and was honorably discharged.

He worked for Highline Electric and the City of Holyoke. BJ took great pride in making sure the cemetery looked like a million bucks. He retired in 2016.

BJ enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball, playing for 50 years as a pitcher. He was very good at sinking the ball while playing pool, something he truly enjoyed. BJ was on the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department for many years and retired in good standing.

He enjoyed going and doing many different things. BJ enjoyed making trips to Blackhawk and spending time with his friends, whether listening to music or talking about anything that came to mind. He was always a good prankster; he loved to joke and have a good time.

For many years you might have caught BJ at a car show in a three-state area with his bright yellow Cyclone or zipping around Holyoke on his red scooter, “Lil Red.” One thing is for sure — he always had a smile on his face.

William was a great husband to Cheryl Salvador for 32 years. Many of his greatest times were spending time with her and going on many adventures together. It really didn’t matter what they were doing as long as they were together.

William is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his two children, Mark Johnston and Sheila O’Neil; two granddaughters, Alissa O’Neil and Abigail Porter; sister, Janice Houser and Les; father-in-law, Paul Salvador and Joan; sister-in-law, Judy Crossland; brother-in-law, Mike Salvador and Carol; many nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

William was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Florence Salvador; and brother-in-law, Harold Crossland.

Services will be held Friday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. at Baucke Funeral Home in Holyoke. Final resting place will be the Holyoke Cemetery.

Memorial donations in BJ’s memory can be sent to Cheryl Salvador, 310 S. Sheridan Ave., Holyoke, CO 80734.

Baucke Funeral Home is directing the service.
