Donna Dorine Pomeroy, 88, of Merino died Feb. 12, 2017, at the Sterling Living Center in Sterling. Though sharp of mind, her body wore out after a stoic 13-year battle with multiple myeloma. Donna was born in Holyoke to Karl and Margaret (Haertel) Schulz Nov. 8, 1928.
The family lived on a farm near Amherst. She attended school through her sophomore year in Amherst and graduated from Holyoke High School in 1945. She attended Colorado State College of Education in Greeley for two years.
On Feb. 5, 1948, she married Perry J. Pomeroy Jr. in Los Angeles, California, on a popular radio program, “Bride & Groom.” They lived on a farm west of Atwood, caring for and raising a large family. For many years they owned a dairy, and Donna made butter and ice cream from the abundant cream.
She enjoyed gardening and, in the fall, canned peaches and pears and froze bushels of sweet corn for their family of six. She was gifted in the kitchen and was a master at making pies and angel food cake; however, she was best known for her chocolate chip cookies.
She was a Sunday school teacher at the Atwood Methodist Church for 12 years and a 4-H leader in the Atwood Hustlers 4-H Club for 15 years, sharing her skill and knowledge of sewing and cooking with many members.
Donna was an avid reader and a regular visitor to the public library. Her children and grandchildren were a source of joy and interest, and she followed their school, 4-H and extracurricular activities. She never missed acknowledging a birthday or special event with a timely card.
She is survived by her sons, Perry Pomeroy III and Sammie of Merino, Rich Pomeroy and Pat Bone of Sterling, Kenneth Pomeroy of Merino, Glen Pomeroy and Linda Kovac of Chugiak, Alaska, and Clark Pomeroy and Angela Rutherford of Sterling; daughter, Mary and Owen Rumph of Biddle, Montana; sister, Margaret Wade of Holyoke; sister-in-law, Donna of Los Lunas, New Mexico; sister-in-law, Jeanne and husband Bill Utlaut of Boulder; grandchildren, C.J. Pomeroy and wife Brook, Jon and Zach Pomeroy, Michelle and husband David Schuette of San Diego, California, Jim Bone of Kansas City, Missouri, Jackie and Taylor Rumph of Biddle, Greg Hancock and wife Lisa of East Prairie, Missouri, and Emily and Thomas Rutherford; and great-grandchildren, Sydney, Jordyn and Taryn Schuette and Haydon, Daeton and Bradon Bone; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Perry J. in 2012; and brother, Douglas Schulz in 2006.
Her remains were donated to science, and a “Celebration of Life” reception honoring Donna will be held Saturday, April 15, at 2 p.m. at the High Plains Education Center at the Overland Trail Museum in Sterling.
Donations can be made to the Logan County 4-H Foundation, 508 10th Ave., Suite 1, Sterling, CO 80751, or to a charity of choice.
