Duane Meinte

Duane Russell Meinte was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Blue Hill, Nebraska, to Martin and Hattie Meinte. He died Sept. 22, 2019, at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke at the age of 91.

Duane was baptized in March of 1928 and was confirmed into the Christian faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. He attended Phillips County High School and graduated in 1945.

Duane entered the U.S. Army in October of 1950 and served in the Korean War. He was employed at the Amherst Co-op Elevator for nearly 45 years before retiring as general manager in 1992. He was a charter member of the Amherst Volunteer Fire Department and served for 25 years. Duane was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke and served on numerous boards.

Duane married Lorna (Groshans) Martin on June 25, 1954, in Sterling. To this marriage, a son, Mike, was born and welcomed into the family by three sisters and a brother.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorna; brothers, Vernell and Keith; brother-in-law, Ray Leben; sons-in-law, Kenneth Heermann, Harold Jenkins, Gary Fulscher and Ed Holloway.

Duane is survived by his son, Mike of Holyoke; four stepchildren, Naomi Heermann of Holyoke, Jim and wife Shirley Martin of Longmont, Mary Fulscher of Amherst and Carmen Holloway of Greeley; sister, Yvonne and husband Boyce Wernet of Holyoke; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held Sept. 27 at Zion Lutheran Church, with Pastor Gary Rahe officiating. Interment followed at the Holyoke Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Duane R. Meinte Memorial.

Baucke Funeral Home directed the service.
