Louis Hamilton Barnett, age 89, of Fleming, died March 17, 2022, at Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan.

Louis was born July 12, 1932, to Wayne and Phyllis Barnett in Brownell, Kansas. He was the second of five children. His siblings were Lawrence, Mary, John and Barb.

The family enjoyed living the country life. When Lou and his brother Lawrence were young, they hid a sack of gold coins in the ground at the old homestead. He always wanted to go back to see if he could find them, but he never got the chance. As a child, he had his share of trials and tribulations. Due to having polio and falling off a horse and breaking his hip, he spent much of his time in the Children’s Hospital.

The family moved from Brownell to Arapahoe in 1946 and later moved to Laird, where he graduated from high school in 1951. The summer after graduation he married Delores Fox, and they were married for 16 years. From that marriage they had four children, Douglas, Donald, David and Debra.

Lou and Dee moved from Wray to Fort Morgan in 1955, where he worked for a Texaco station, then later owned and operated Lou’s Texaco. In approximately 1963, he purchased his first truck and continued to drive truck and broker grain until his retirement.

In 1971, he married Jane Steele (aka Grandma Jane). They lived in Sterling at the time, then bought a lot and set up home in Fleming. Years later they moved to Windsor for a few years to be closer to Jane’s doctors. After Jane died May 16, 1993, Lou decided to move back to Fleming, where he lived until his death.

Lou loved semitrucks, country music and his chocolate milk. He enjoyed sharing a good story and offering his advice to all who would listen.

Lou is survived by his dear friend, Patsy Shields of Haxtun; brother, Jon Barnett and Virginia Barnett of Augusta, Kansas; four children, Doug Barnett and Stella Carlson of Fort Morgan, Don Barnett and Antonette Barnett of Columbus, Nebraska, Dave Barnett and Barb Barnett of Greeley, and Deb Senseney and Bill Senseney of Orchard; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Gene, Randy, Gary, Marge, Hal and Jim, and their families, which include 20 step-grandchildren, 39 step-great-grandchildren and 12 step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Phyllis and Wayne Barnett; wife, Jane; brother, Lawrence; sisters, Mary Cox and Barbara Jacobs; stepson, Les Steele; and four step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 24, at 10:30 a.m. at Fleming United Methodist Church, 301 N. Custer Ave., with graveside services and lunch following.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fleming Fire Department and/or Fleming United Methodist Church.
