Sandra Kay Kurtzer, 65, of Haxtun died July 9, 2017, at the Haxtun Hospital Extended Care Unit due to complications of Huntington’s disease. She was born Sept. 20, 1951, in Wray to Willard and Shirley (Meyers) Walz.
    She grew up outside of Wray with her sister, Connie, and brother, Tom. At the age of 17, the family moved to Hot Sulphur Springs for a year and later moved to Haxtun, where she graduated from Haxtun High School in 1969. She married Dick Kurtzer April 14, 1973, in Las Vegas. To this union, two sons were born: Jared in 1977 and Ryan in 1980.
    Sandy loved to help on the farm. She was happy to make many trips after parts and somehow still make it to the field with a meal for supper. She enjoyed teaching Bible School and Sunday School and teaching her boys about her love for the Lord.
    She was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She enjoyed making the boys clothes as they were growing up and adding to her fabric stash. She also enjoyed antiquing with Dick. She had an eye for the best stuff and enjoyed collecting dishes and furniture. She loved watching her grandchildren grow and always gave them the best hugs.
    She spent many years fighting Huntington’s disease. She always had a positive attitude and a fierce sense of determination. She set a wonderful example of how to battle the disease with grace.
    Sandy is survived by her husband, Dick of Haxtun; sons, Jared and wife Heather and Ryan and wife Brittany, all of Haxtun; grandchildren, Zoe and Otto Kurtzer and Quinn, Adley and Charleigh Kurtzer, all of Haxtun; sister, Connie Asmus of Yuma; brother, Tom Walz of Haxtun; and many nieces and nephews and extended family.
    Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Shirley Walz.
    Funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, July 20, at 10 a.m. at Haxtun United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jeri Soens officiating. Inurnment was set to follow at the Haxtun Cemetery.
