Steven Wayne Cogburn of Holyoke died Sept. 12, 2022, at UC Health Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins after a six-month battle with multiple myeloma cancer. He was 70 years old.

Steve was born in Greeley to Charlie and Joan Cogburn on June 27, 1952. He graduated from Valley High School in 1970. He remained around Gilcrest for a few years after graduation and attended NJC in Sterling before being drafted in 1972. He joined the Air Force the day he reported for the draft and served in Michigan, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

After discharge, he returned to Colorado and farmed with his family for nine years in Yuma County. He met the love of his life, Marcia (Ewald) Peckham, in 1983 and asked her to marry him at a Broncos game in October of that year. They were married on March 2, 1984, and spent the next year on the farm.

They moved into Holyoke in 1985, and Steve went to work at Stickney’s Inc. until 1986. Steve and Marcia then moved to Denver to find work in September of that year, where he went to work for Parts Inc. Warehouse, where he became manager of their parts stores in Aurora. In 1987 Steve became auto parts manager for Parker Automotive.

The couple then moved back to Holyoke in 1988, where he managed a mobile home park for a year before going to work for Scholl Oil managing their service center. In 1996 he began managing the Holyoke NAPA store. In 1997 Steve went to work rebuilding old school buses to haul hogs for D&D Farms in Holyoke and Wray. In 1999 he went to work for the Big A store (later to become Carquest), and from 2001-2014 Steve worked managing Sullivan’s Appliance.

He left the appliance store in 2014 and worked part time as an opener for a local fast food place. He did this until 2017 when Marcia’s health began to fail. He spent several hours a day caring for her in the nursing home when he wasn’t able to care for her at home.

Steve continued his unwavering care for Marcia until her death. Steve was her lone caregiver for the last year of her life, and she was in his arms when she died on Oct. 16, 2020. After Marcia’s death, Steve was asked to start a grief counseling group, which he did, and was revered for being great at it.

Steve was the ultimate caregiver, never asking for help for himself. Unfortunately, in March of this year he received the cancer diagnosis, which was complicated with heart and kidney failure. He fought the disease until his death. He asked as little as he could of others during this time as to not be a burden on anyone. He will be remembered fondly for the care he gave others and the selflessness he displayed during his time of need.

Steve now joins his father, Charlie, and his wife, Marcia, in heaven.

Those left to miss him and his laughter are his mother, Joan; three sisters, Diana Cogburn and Willie, Vicky Fillinger and Chris, and Kim Cogburn; two stepsons, Brent Peckham and Sherrie and Todd Peckham; his beloved pups, Oso and Ariel; and many other family and friends.

The funeral service will be held Monday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Holyoke, with inurnment immediately following at Holyoke Cemetery.
