Yes, we’ve started watching Christmas movies. It’s been a rough year.

We added the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel to our Roku because not having cable means we miss out on all their cheesy Christmas movies. One of the first we watched was “Angels Sing” starring Harry Connick, Jr., Connie Britton, Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson. Right there, you have to think, “Ok! We’re gonna get some folksy, crooning Christmas goodness that’ll warm the coldest winter night.”

And you’d be dead wrong.

Michael Walker (Connick) used to love Christmas as a kid. Right up until tragedy struck and he always held himself accountable for what happened. Every year, his son David begs to do more for Christmas and this year, he wants to spend not only Thanksgiving but also an entire week with his grandparents (Kristofferson and Fionnula Flannagan). Michael objects, but his wife Susan (Britton) presses him to allow it, mostly so they can focus on finding a new house after the one they are renting is sold. While on a bike ride, Michael nearly crashes into a reindeer (this was filmed and is set in Texas.) His bike wrecked, he walks it home through a fancy neighborhood where he sees a massive, gorgeous home for sale. Intrigued, he heads toward the house and a man calls to him from the porch. After a brief chat, Nick (Nelson) offers to show him the house and ultimately asks him to make an offer. Knowing they could never afford what’s basically a mansion, Michael bids what he knows they couldn’t pay half of for the house. Nick agrees! Under the condition that they maintain the standards of the neighborhood. Suddenly, Michael and Susan have a new home!
