‘Let It Snow’ has two-thirds of a wonderfully different take on a Christmas story

Netflix originals are hit or miss — this is known. This is especially true of their holiday movies. Sometimes they’re really well done with a solid budget and people who really care. Other times, they’re what’s leftover from Lifetime or the Hallmark Channel when they run out of money to distribute them. We decided to give one of their latest films, “Let It Snow,” a shot just to see how bad it might be. Turns out, two-thirds of it are quite great!

“Let It Snow” follows three love stories all coalescing on Christmas Eve. Addie (Odeya Rush, “Lady Bird,” “Goosebumps”) is freaking out because her boyfriend isn’t responding to her (I’ll say it because it’s said in the film) desperate attempts to get in touch with him. Her best friend Dorrie (Liv Hewson, “Santa Clarita Diet,” “In-Humans”) tries to comfort her but is running out of patience for her nonsense. Meanwhile, she’s dealing with her own relationship issues when a cheerleader she spent a night with, Kerry (Anna Akana, a ton of indie films), comes in with her friends while Dorrie is working at Waffle Town, and Kerry completely rebuffs her affection.

Also Tobin (Mitchell Hope, all “The Descendents” movies) and Angie aka the Duke (Kiernan Shipka, “Mad Men,” “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) have their own friction as Tobin has decided to finally tell her that he loves her, but when she says she’s been invited to a college friend’s party, he sees this friend, JP, as competition for her affections.

Storyline No. 3 is by far the best-acted section about Julie (Isabela Merced, “Instant Family,” “Dora and the Lost City of Gold”) who meets famous musician and generally sad dude Stuart (Shameik Moore, the voice of Miles Morales in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse”) on a train when he mistakes her for paparazzi and she tries to return his dropped phone. They end up stuck on the train due to — you guessed it — snow, and walk to the nearby Waffle Town where pretty much the rest of the film will take place.
