From basketball to helping neighbors, N.E. Colorado rocks

Rival communities in the sports venue join hands in camaraderie in times of need. That’s Northeast Colorado, and that’s why I’m proud to call it my home.

Never has that neighborliness been more evident than this past week. When the winds blew and the fire raged last Monday and Tuesday, the barriers of team rivalry during state basketball week were not even considered as volunteers surfaced almost immediately to lend equipment, service and support.

The endless stories are phenomenal of combined efforts to assist and support the firefighters and other first responders, as well as those who suffered such terrific loss of land, homes, other property and livelihood.

Haxtun set up care stations in such a solid way, working hard and reaching out and accepting any and all volunteer time, resources and hugs.

Words can’t begin to express the appreciation felt when hearing the selfless deeds contributed by our locals and even by firefighters and first responders from afar — clear to the Front Range.

In the midst of the chaotic week, CHS Grainland had a fundraising event planned in Phillips County last Wednesday. In respect for the turn of events in the county brought on by the fire, the event was postponed until Monday, March 13.

Added to the Harvest for Hunger emphasis was a pledge to donate a portion of proceeds from the CHS Cajun Boil/mouse races event to victims of the Logan/Phillips County fire. Not only does this include the event in Holyoke Monday but also the ones scheduled this week in Akron and Yuma.
