Living in a rural community means that everyone knows at least the basics about agriculture, like where milk, bread, meat and eggs come from, right? Not necessarily. We are living in a society that is becoming farther and farther removed from production agriculture, even in rural communities.
Farm and ranch families comprise just 2 percent of the United States’ population. Compare that to 40 percent who were directly involved in agriculture in 1900. According to a 2011 survey conducted by the United States Farmers and Ranchers Alliance, 72 percent of consumers know nothing or very little about farming or ranching. Because of the disconnect between the consumer and production agriculturalists, now is the time for all farmers and ranchers to tell their story and become an agvocate.
Many of you have probably seen the Peterson Farm Brothers who created the YouTube parody videos such as “I’m Farming and I Grow It” and “Farmer Style.” These Kansas brothers became overnight agvocates (before anyone had even heard the word “agvocate”) all because they “wanted to communicate to the world how cool farming is,” said Greg Peterson. If you have not seen one of their YouTube videos, simply search for Peterson Brothers parodies on YouTube. Agvocates can start out small and make a big difference!
