Exploring 4-H visual arts project

The new 4-H year began Oct. 1. Current and new 4-H members are busy reviewing the new state 4-H project list. The list includes 40 projects in which 4-H members can choose to participate. Through project exploration and project work, 4-H members develop skills needed to succeed in life. There is a wide variety of projects to choose from. Members can learn about raising animals in the livestock projects, they can study another country in the global citizenship project or they can show their creative side in the scrapbooking project.
For artistic youth, the visual arts project may be a good fit. This project helps members develop more skills in drawing, painting and other art media. There are two units in the visual arts project, both of which are open to 4-H members ages 8-18. The units are sketchbook crossroads including drawing, fiber and sculpture; and portfolio pathways including painting, printing and graphic design.
In the sketchbook crossroads unit, members accomplish the following learning experiences:
— Explore three media areas of drawing, fiber arts and sculpting.
— Understand the elements and principles of design.
— Encourage the development of skills for a lifetime.
— Choose and evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas.
— Reflect upon and access the characteristics and merits of your work and the work of others.
— Make connections between visual arts and other disciplines.
