Passion: The unified trait that defines all health care workers

There is a unified trait that defines all health care workers. That trait is passion. Without passion, it would be difficult to work in the health care field. Other traits that encompass passion are compassion, empathy and striving to be the best that we can be to our patients and their families.

Are you passionate about your health care? Just as you are passionate about yourself, you should expect passionate health care as well. As a patient, I expect passionate, quality health care; as a provider, I expect to provide passionate quality health care as well.  

For me and others, even after a patient is discharged, the circumstances that brought him/her in don’t stop. With every encounter and patient experience, I look to see what I could have done better or differently, or ways I could have improved care. At a minimum, you should expect no less about your health care. Quality, efficient and thorough health care should be the expectation no matter where you choose to seek help. That health care starts before you even enter the building. It begins with a phone call or even talk around the community with others.

I reflect to my multiple encounters and hospital stays after I was surprised in November of 2016 with emergency quadruple vessel bypass surgery. Just 24-48 hours prior to the day of bypass, I was working out in the gym, with no idea what I would soon be facing. The night before surgery, I remember just breaking down in tears uncontrollably. As I went back to the operating room, I was the most scared I had ever been.
