Peace is worth fighting for

We are getting ready to hit five years of rural ministry, and I’ve learned a lot. One truth in particular is how gossip and slander can literally destroy relationships. It’s probably not just true for rural ministry but anywhere in life! If someone has hurt or offended us, we too often don’t go to that person like we’re called to biblically. I’m guilty too.

The result of us not going to people directly is we can grow bitter, angry, frustrated and more. You then go to other people instead and that causes a bigger mess because with more people involved, the lines of communication are blurred and details get confused. Even friends and family members who we trust and love dearly might not have the full story so that requires a lot of humility to see they could be wrong.

Judgments and presumptions can be really hard to beat. But it’s worth it for the health and joy of our relationships.

I’ve also learned that there are always two sides to every story. If you hear a story around town about someone, don’t accept it too quickly. Chances are good there’s another angle. Be cautious!

Be careful of someone who’s constantly putting down other people when you’re with them.

It’s worth doing some research and looking at all sides to a story before judging.
