It was a typical day when my daughter planted her first pumpkin seeds in our yard. I’m pretty sure the wind was blowing and the sun was shining. Rebekah’s nails were dirty from the soil as she carefully dug each hole to place her chosen seeds. I could see the delight on her face when she finished.

More ordinary days passed since the day she planted. We didn’t always think about our seeds due to life’s busyness. But then one day we saw the large prickly green vines and yellow flowers revealing themselves. Weeks passed, and Rebekah was thrilled to see the baby pumpkins taking shape in the colors of green and orange.

In the mundane, darkness of the soil where you don’t always see much happening, miracles grow. A minuscule seed transforms into a harvest of ripened crops we get to enjoy. Harvest reminds us of the power of the mundane — as our farmers faithfully plot — day in and day out — waiting patiently.

Putting your faith in Jesus can work in a similar way. You don’t always see the fruit of your investment in the life of another person, the discipline of Bible study, your prayers for a prodigal child, serving in your local church, trusting God for his promises, applying yourself to wisdom, allowing suffering to shape your character and more.
