4-H enrollment for the 2017-18 year is just beginning. Members are currently considering projects for the upcoming year. Some of these projects will not truly begin until this coming spring.
However, the 4-H market beef project requires more time and therefore, members who are enrolled in this project are in the midst of selecting their animals now for the 2018 county fair season.
So what do 4-H members look for and take into consideration when selecting their market beef animals? First, they need to determine where to get their animal. Can they pick a steer or heifer out of their family’s herd? Or do they need to attend an auction or consider a private treaty sale?
After determining where to purchase the animal, several key factors are taken into consideration to make the final selection for the best possible market beef project.
Members need to consider animal breed, size and quality when evaluating project possibilities. While general management and nutrition both are important in the outcome of the project, members will want to start with the best quality project they can. Members also need to keep their budget in mind when selecting their project.
For a beginner who is learning about feeding, management, etc., good quality calves bought at a modest price may be the wisest investment. Purchasing higher priced calves does not guarantee success or easier management of the project.
