When October gives you all the feels (and then some)

When my husband and I had four kids 5 and under, we bought an old fixer-upper home in East Dallas and something special stood in our front lawn: a pecan tree. I’ll never forget the crisp October day we spent picking up pecan shells from the ground and throwing them into buckets.
When we got inside, the big kids helped crack them open at our kitchen table, and they were ecstatic our tree had produced such yummy goodness. They proudly told our family and friends,
“We have a pecan tree! We can eat them too!” They discovered the hard work of using a nutcracker to open the jewel inside. That week we were just settling into “fall” in Texas which still feels like summer. Now we live in Colorado, and the four seasons are obvious. Still, October is my favorite of all.
Sometimes I daydream about October in the spring, summer and winter. And it’s not just because it’s my birthday month, my husband’s or my oldest kids birthdays (four out of six of us are October babies!), but because there’s something so special and heart-warming in:
— Colorful leaves transforming before your eyes.
— Golden hour before sundown.
— Plaid button-down tops, puffy vests and boots.
