Winter is coming faster than we thought. Just like winterizing a camper and boat, we must also winterize our bodies. It is so important to remember your health this upcoming season. Staying healthy is so important any time of year, but here are some things to consider this upcoming season.
First of all, it is important to stay active. I used to work as a nurse practitioner in Alaska. Now because it gets so cold in Alaska, many people are confined to indoors more. There was more depression, weight gain and substance abuse during the winter months. I am in no way comparing eastern Colorado to Alaska in that perspective, but people change in the winter. I see some patients fall into a slump of inactivity and depression.
It is also easy to make the excuse to not work out because it is so cold and stay in the warmth of your toasty bed and heated house. Some people may even resort to other things like alcohol potentially to occupy down time. We are in no way as isolated like Alaska, and we do have nice amenities in town that honestly staying active is not as hard as you think. Bundle up and get out on nice days and walk. Have you considered joining your local fitness center? What about home exercise equipment? You could also join a local group through your church or the Lions Club. The point being, sure it is cold but there is no excuse you can’t stay active for your health.
Speaking of health, when was the last time you had an annual wellness exam? If winter is the slower season for you, why not consider an annual wellness exam with your provider? You may want to start by making the winter season when you come in for your annual wellness exam and physical each year.
Hygiene plays a major factor any time of year. It never fails all the kids start passing around their ailments from colds, flu and pink eye due to going back to school. The No. 1 way to prevent spread of illness is simple, and that is basic hygiene like washing your hands and covering your mouth when you cough. This is truly important for everyone, but even more important if you have a chronic medical condition like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease such as asthma or bronchitis.
Also if you are on any medications or treatments that suppress the immune system, like chronic steroids, rheumatoid arthritis treatments or chemotherapy, hygiene becomes more important. Additionally, hygiene with the very young and very old is warranted to stay healthy. Speaking of hygiene, hold your provider accountable — ask us have we washed our hands or used hand sanitizer. Don’t be afraid to ask us to do so if you don’t see us.
