4 school board members take oaths of office for service

Oaths of office were administered to four school board members at the Nov. 16 board meeting.

The Nov. 2 board election was canceled when only two candidates filed nomination petitions for the three open board seats.

Those two candidates, incumbents Jon Kleve and Brady Ring, took their oaths of office last week to serve four-year terms on the board of education.

Two open seats remained on the board. Member Pat Wiebers was term limited and ineligible for reelection, and member Chas Lengfelder resigned from the board because he’s moving from the community.

Three people submitted candidate information to be considered for appointment to the two open seats. Jessica Cumming, Mike Brown and Nain Vasquez were interviewed at the beginning of last Tuesday’s meeting.

Cumming and Vasquez were appointed to the two open board positions and took their oaths of office at that time. They will serve until the next board election in November of 2023.

Board officers for the next two years were elected as follows: Dusty Sprague, president; Jon Kleve, vice president; Summer Maloney, secretary; and Justin Clayton, treasurer.

A surprise reception prior to the meeting was held to recognize Wiebers for her eight years of service on the board.

3 equipment options reviewed for elementary playground

Noting that the elementary school playground equipment was designed to last about 25 years, it was noted that it is currently 22 years old. Some repairs and upgrades are needed.

Holyoke Elementary School Principal Andrea Kammer gathered price information since last July, with prices valid for only 30 days from when they were quoted.

Using that information, the board looked at three options. Superintendent Kyle Stumpf and Kammer will have updated info at the Dec. 8 board meeting after talking with city recreation director Victoria Dunker.

Option A cites replacing what needs repaired to last another 10 years for $135,530.

Option B involves demolition and replacement of all playground equipment with a smaller version (not ADA compliant) that should last another 25 years for $200,177.

Option C, for an estimated $282,860, cites demolition and replacement of all equipment with an ADA compliant access to last 25 years.

The potential of the school being moved in six to seven years affects the decision. The board also looked at grant application and acceptance timelines with regard to the project.
