Break from textbooks allows kids to rediscover the joy of reading

All last week, Holyoke Elementary was abuzz with activities to celebrate National Read Across America Day. Schools across the country celebrate reading and literacy annually on March 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
Tuesday, Feb. 26, was “Hats off to Dr. Seuss” at Holyoke Elementary. Students and teachers donned hats and crazy hairstyles. The Cat in the Hat greeted everyone on the way in to school, and Principal Andrea Kammer read to the student body to kick off the week.
On Wednesday, they dressed as their favorite book characters, and the day began with a parade throughout the school to showcase the costumes. Characters ranged from Laura Ingalls Wilder to Batman, and “Bad Kitty” seemed to be an especially popular read this year.
Topsy-turvy outfits represented the wild world of Dr. Seuss on Thursday, and the week wrapped up with Read Across America Day on Friday. In the morning, parents shared pastries and read with students. At the end of the day, the whole school had a read-in. Students had a chance to wear pajamas and get comfortable with a pillow and blanket while enjoying a good book.
