Career fair encourages hundreds of 8th-grade students to consider local jobs in the future

Northeast Colorado Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness Partnership was back in Holyoke this year for a second eighth-grade career fair for area schools. Made possible by a $300,000 El Pomar grant received by Northeast Colorado BOCES in January 2017, the career fair was first held in Holyoke last year.
This year’s fair was held Jan. 23 at the Phillips County Event Center. About 300 students from 12 area schools were in attendance, and 42 presenters representing business from Holyoke and surrounding towns spoke about careers in their respective fields.
Students also had an opportunity to hear from keynote speaker Trampas Hutches, CEO of Melissa Memorial Hospital.
Organizers made an effort to have businesses from each of the six career clusters on hand. Industries included:
    — Business, marketing and public administration.
    — Agriculture, natural resources and energy.
    — Science, technology, engineering, math, arts, design and information technology.
    — Hospitality, human services and education.
    — Health science, criminal justice and public safety.
    — Skilled trades and technical sciences.
