Daniel, Kreider transition to new positions at school

Two familiar faces are heading into unfamiliar territory at the start of the 2022-23 school year.

Carly Daniel, who has taught at Holyoke School District for a decade, was hired for the newly created dean of students position at Holyoke Elementary School.

Summer Kreider is tackling a new counselor position at Holyoke JR/SR High School — an echo of where she first started with the district in 2007.

Carly Daniel

Even though the school district began the search for deans of students at both the elementary and the JR/SR high, it hasn’t yet found a good fit for the JR/SR high position.

Daniel has had a teaching position at Holyoke Elementary since 2012 and is making a smooth transition to her dean of students role this school year.

She is in charge of the response to intervention program that helps struggling students who don’t need special education services.

Daniel will also be a support to both returning and new staff members. She can help with standards resources or lesson plans and can even observe them in the classroom and then coach them on areas for improvement. With more staff members taking nontraditional routes to teaching, Daniel’s support will be more important than ever, she said.

Other tasks for the dean of students include assisting with advanced learners plans, teaching math interventions for students who are struggling, taking on a bigger role with the Student-Centered Accountability Program, handling daily behavior issues and supervising extracurricular activities.

Daniel will be the first go-to if Holyoke Elementary School Principal Andrea Kammer is away, and her role as the dean of students will free up some of Kammer’s time so she can be in classrooms more.

She said she truly enjoys working with people, and now she has the added bonus of being able to call all K-6 students “her kids” instead of just those in her classroom.

Daniel grew up in Haxtun and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 2011 from the University of Northern Colorado followed by a master’s in educational leadership in 2017 from UNC. She holds both a professional principal license and a teaching license.

She is married to Travis Daniel, and their kids are Haeden, a fourth grader, and Kort, a second grader. The family enjoys camping, Rockies games and all things 4-H.

Summer Kreider

Kreider has joined JR/SR high school counselor Ashley Clayton as a second counselor for the building to meet the needs of the students.

Kreider will be the counselor for the social-emotional needs of mainly the seventh, eighth and ninth graders; however, she said that if a student has built a relationship with her or with Clayton, they are welcome to go to either one.

She will also be managing the seminar/capstone classes for those three grades as well as registering all new students in grades 7-12.

Kreider is continuing her work as the Homegrown Talent Initiative coordinator by organizing internships for students, providing ways to get industry certificates and working with local businesses.

Beginning in the spring of 2020, Kreider was the HTI coordinator — though not a school staff member — for two and a half years because of special grant funding. This year, the school will be getting different grant funding to continue building on the foundation that the HTI program built.

“We’re fully implemented,” said Kreider. “Now we can just move forward and make a difference. We’re headed in such a good direction.” She added that it makes it fun to be on the cutting edge of education.

She also said it’s great to be back working with the students in a counselor role. Kreider was a counselor at Holyoke JR/SR High from 2007-14.

This 2000 HHS alum earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UNC in 2004 and a master’s in school counseling from the University of Phoenix in 2006. She also has experience as a school board member.

Her kids are Cody, a 10th grader; Macie, a seventh grader; and Eli, a second grader.
