FCCLA students aim to fill empty bowls, empty bellies

Jan. 11 meal to raise funds

Recognizing that children and adults in their own community often go hungry, two Holyoke FCCLA students are working to change that.
Kyra Loutensock and Cash Adler initiated a chapter service project this fall that will provide meals for local families as well as develop philanthropy and compassion in Holyoke students.
The first phase of the project is the Empty Bowl Supper scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Holyoke High School old gym from 6-8 p.m.
Attendees will have the opportunity to pick a ceramic bowl before filling it with delicious soup. At the end of the meal, they will get to take the bowl home with them.
“It’s a reminder that many have only an empty bowl when it is time for supper,” said Loutensock.
Tickets are currently being sold by Holyoke FCCLA members or can be purchased at the door.
Loutensock and Adler are also accepting donations of ceramic soup bowls to use at the Empty Bowl Supper. They’d like to have them all collected by Friday, Jan. 5.
The supper, said Loutensock, is a way to spread awareness but also to take action.
All of the funds raised at the Empty Bowl Supper will go toward a meal packing event at Holyoke JR/SR High Tuesday, Feb. 27.
FCCLA is partnering with a charity called Feeding Children Everywhere in hopes of packaging as many as 10,000 meals for those in need.
