Gifted students go above and beyond at CU neuroscience event

Gifted Holyoke students in grades 3, 4 and 6 traveled to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling last Friday, Feb. 8, for hands-on neuroscience lessons offered through a University of Colorado Boulder outreach program.
Students built “helmets” to protect eggs from simulated injuries, operated a mechanical claw with electrodes attached to their arms, made models to understand the phenomenon of neuroinflammation and more.
Holyoke School District gifted and talented coordinator Laura Loutensock said “Ultimate Celebration 2019: Celebrating the Brain” built on the basic principles of neuroscience and brain anatomy that are typically taught to students.
“This definitely went into much greater detail,” she said. “It’s great for our kids to be recognized, and I think they really enjoyed it.”
About 120 students from Holyoke, Sterling, Peetz, Julesburg, Haxtun, Akron, Strasburg, Idalia, Yuma, Limon and Burlington schools were slated to attend.
