Girls State, Boys State delegates report on educational weeks

    The community of Holyoke, as well as the local American Legion/Auxiliary, was well-represented by four Holyoke High School students this summer. Lauren Bergner and Josie Herman attended the Auxiliary’s 2019 Colorado Girls State, and Slaten Burris and Seth Watson attended the Legion’s 2019 Colorado Boys State.

    At Girls State, Bergner’s highlight was being elected treasurer on the state level. During the June 9-14 event held at University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, participants ran mock governments on city, county and state levels.
    Though she initially did not plan to run for office, Bergner’s peers encouraged her to do so, and she’s glad she did. It took her outside of her comfort zone, and the result was much more participation than she would have seen otherwise. As part of her campaign, she wrote and delivered three separate speeches.
