Holyoke Elem. brainpower put to work

Twenty-three students from Holyoke Elementary School competed in the 11th annual Sunrise Optimist Brain Bowl at Fort Morgan High School Saturday, Jan. 28.
Those representing Holyoke’s two fifth-sixth-grade teams included sixth-graders Isaiah Rahe, Max Kleve, Ethan Schneller, Madysen Powell, Brendan Nelson and Cooper Goldenstein; and fifth-graders Joseph Schroetlin, Edel Ramos, Andrea Marquez, Anna Hayes, Adison Goldenstein and Tayla Martin.
Holyoke also had two third-fourth-grade teams, including fourth-graders Matthew Murray, Sawyer Sigler, Layna Wear, Tyler Bergstrom, Nicole Schlachter, Ben Kleve, Leah Struckmeyer, Dahira Castillo Marquez and Peyton Marlow; and third-graders Nevaeh Speicher and Mason Sprague.
Thirty-three teams of students from grades 3-6 competed with other schools from northeast Colorado. Each team consisted of five to six members who buzzed in to answer questions in the areas of literature, science, math, history, technology, sports, spelling, grammar, current events and trivia.
The two Holyoke fifth-sixth-grade teams finished third and fourth place out of 18 teams in their grade category. A single point dashed the hopes of Holyoke students from participating in the championship round.
