Project encourages Holyoke to stay home, shop locally

“Keep your money where your home is.”
That’s the slogan of this year’s FBLA American Enterprise project in which three Holyoke High School freshmen are making it their business to help grow local businesses.
“The goal is to encourage individuals to shop locally,” said Shianne Willmon, noting the project will educate Holyoke citizens about the benefits of staying in town to shop.
“Shopping locally will benefit me in the long run,” added Josie Herman. She explained that by utilizing local businesses, money is circulated around town, it stimulates the economy, taxes benefit local citizens and a thriving main street looks inviting to newcomers.
“Local owners support us, so we should support them,” she said.
It also creates jobs, said Emily Jelden. “Without jobs, people won’t want to move here.”
