Miles named CASE director

The Colorado Association of School Executives is thrilled to announce that longtime CASE member Bret Miles has been named the next CASE executive director. He was unanimously selected by a hiring committee of CASE members representing all seven association departments and will assume the role in late spring.

This announcement concludes a months-long intensive national search process that began last fall when current CASE Executive Director Lisa Escárcega announced her plan to retire in the coming months.

A public education administrator for over 20 years, Miles has extensive experience as both a district as well as statewide leader. He has served as executive director of the Northeast Colorado BOCES since 2015 and prior to that served as superintendent in the Holyoke and Brush school districts.

His involvement in CASE began at the same time as his career as an administrator and includes serving on the board of directors for CASSA, CASE’s superintendent and senior administrator department, as well as co-chair of the CASE Legislative Committee.

Miles is held in high regard by his colleagues for his collaborative leadership style, with a proven history of bringing together diverse viewpoints to create a common and unified goal. He played an integral role in spearheading work among Colorado superintendents to propose a new school funding formula, which 174 of 178 superintendents endorsed.

Those efforts, along with his strong advocacy for several statewide campaigns to fight for a more equitable and adequate school finance act, led to Miles being recognized in 2019 with CASE’s Colbert Cushing Award. This is among the association’s highest awards and is given to an individual who has made an outstanding professional contribution to public education. CASE and CASSA leadership jointly select the honoree each year.
