New elementary student council gets started with food drive deliveries

Looking for a way to improve the school’s culture, Holyoke Elementary recently established a student council. Made up of fifth- and sixth-graders, the organization will give students an opportunity to serve, be positive role models and boost student morale.
One of the first acts of the new council was to distribute the donations collected during this year’s elementary food drive. Each year, the entire school is encouraged to bring in canned goods and other food donations preceding Christmas break.
On Friday, Dec. 21, student council members delivered about a dozen boxes of food to each of the food pantries at the local Methodist and Lutheran churches.
In order to form the student council, faculty encouraged students to think about how they could be a positive influence on the school. Those interested in joining gave speeches to their classes, who then voted. Two members were elected from each class.
