Swaths of empty seats at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland during the Colorado 2A girls state quarterfinals March 12 were one of the early signs of preventative measures to come in Colorado. In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, events are being postponed or canceled across the state, the nation and the world. As of March 15, the recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is that in-person events that consist of 50 people or more be canceled or postponed. — The Holyoke Enterprise | Johnson Publications

School spring break extended 1 week

Free pickup lunch/breakfast packs available for ages 1-18 starting Monday

This week’s spring break in Holyoke School District has been extended through March 29, with students to return Monday, March 30.

“Though there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Phillips County currently, we want to practice the recommended social distancing and avoid large gatherings of people,” said Superintendent Kyle Stumpf when making the announcement of the extended spring break Tuesday morning, March 17.

Taking a proactive approach to what could escalate into an even longer extension of the school break, Stumpf said the district staff will be meeting Monday, March 23, at 9 a.m. to discuss options, if needed, for how to provide a modified education for students when the schools are closed.

While the administrators have lots of ideas and technology allows this district to do some things that others can’t, teachers will need prep time if an alternative education plan is to be put in place.

Monday’s meeting will find them sharing options and potential avenues for moving forward if the school break is extended into April.

The school district has also canceled all before- and after-school activities taking place in school buildings or on school grounds for both school and community use until Monday, April 18.

Free pickup lunch/breakfast offered Monday-Friday

Starting Monday, March 23, Chartwells and the Holyoke School District will provide an opportunity for families to pick up breakfast and lunch via walk-up or drive-through meal service for any children between the ages of 1-18.

Stumpf said they will have tables set up outside Holyoke Elementary School, on both sides of Kellogg Street, for people to pick up the free lunch/breakfast packages between 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Each meal package per child will provide lunch for the day and breakfast for the next day.

Stumpf emphasized that this service is free for any child in that age range, regardless of whether the family is eligible for free/reduced lunches.

No paperwork is needed, but a child must be present in order to pick up meals. If a person is sick, it is asked that they send another family member to pick up the meals. No meals will be allowed to be eaten on-site.

In an effort to help plan, the district asks those who will pick up meals to contact the district by Friday, March 20, at 4 p.m. to give an estimated number of requested meals for the week.

This information can be called to the district office (970-854-3634), the JR/SR high office (970-854-2284) or the elementary office (970-854-3411).

In the event that the Colorado Department of Education dictates that the school shut down for an extended period, Stumpf said they will continue the Monday-Friday meal service.
