Schools celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week

At the April 19 meeting of the Holyoke School District board of education, the board approved a Teacher Appreciation Week resolution for May 2-6.

The resolution said, “Teachers make public schools great,” “Teachers work to open students’ minds to ideas, knowledge and dreams,” “Teachers keep American democracy alive by laying the foundation for good citizenship,” “Teachers fill many roles as listeners, explorers, role models, motivators and mentors,” and “Teachers continue to influence us long after our school days are only memories.”

The board also discussed updates for board goals, noting they’d like to make them more streamlined, more accessible and more useful while also defining the intent of the goals and roles for those involved.

During Superintendent Kyle Stumpf’s report, he gave updates on a drain issue at the elementary, grant submissions and a third-quarter financial report.

The board approved employment for classified staff as presented.

Approval was given on first reading for Colorado Association of School Boards policies presented April 5, including criminal history record information, and support staff vacations and holidays.

The board also voted 5-1 to approve second reading on CASB policies presented Jan. 4, including entrance age requirements and immunization of students. Board member Jon Kleve voted no and told the board he would like to keep coming back to the entrance age issue. “I think we could develop a little felxibility,” he said. “Is there something that would identify it better than age?”

Prior to the meeting, the board held a work session with junior high and high school wrestling coaches Broc Pelle, Parker Redfern and Dusty McConnell regarding options to revive the Holyoke wrestling program.

“Let’s look at every avenue we can,” said JR/SR high Principal Angela Powell.

“We have to give these guys an opportunity,” said board member Jessica Koch.

Board president Dusty Sprague added, “We’re on life support. ... There’s no quick fix.”
