Seventh graders make, sell cups for FBLA American Enterprise project

Holyoke seventh graders combined glue, tape, cups and glitter Thursday afternoon for a lesson in business through an American Enterprise project hosted by the local Future Business Leaders of America. Holyoke Senior High School students Caden Sporhase, Jaxson Hutches and Carter Van Overbeke served as leaders under the title, “Building a Foundation.”

To prepare the students for the main event, Sporhase said, “We talked about market research, [pricing], markups and other business basics.” This process began around the start of January and continued for about five weeks. Then, they planned out a product to sell using a price sheet to keep track of material costs. They settled on cups decorated with glitter designs.

Overall costs, Sporhase said, were “about $2.69 per item”; after a discussion, the seventh graders decided to sell the product for $8.

“They’re aggressive with it,” he noted.

All of the money acquired through cup sales, he continued, goes back to the seventh-grade class.

Sporhase, Hutches and Van Overbeke are set to present their project at the FBLA State Conference in Denver on Wednesday, April 5.
