Smorgasbord brings in nearly $4,000 for music program

Holyoke bands, choirs combine for annual concert entertainment

The annual smorgasbord dinner and concert Tuesday, Feb. 26, not only showcased Holyoke band and choir students, it also raised close to $4,000 for the school music program.
The Music Parents organization puts on the event every year, and it always draws in a big crowd. Almost 600 people were served at the meal at Holyoke Elementary School before heading to the JR/SR high for the concert.
With 50 tickets sold, sixth-grader Luis Perez was recognized as the top seller.
The majority of proceeds from the dinner will be used to repair band instruments, with additional funds used for microphones, music folders, and maintaining tuxedos and dresses.
Audience members were entertained with a wide variety of music Tuesday evening, with bands from grades 5-12 and choirs from junior high and high school.
Bands were conducted by Aaron Cottam.
The high school band played “St. Petersburg March,” “Boom and Bust” and “Thunderbird,” while the junior high musicians were featured on “Air of Nobility” and “Showdown at High Noon.”
Elementary band students demonstrated skills they have been working on this year in “London Bridge,” “Mary Ann” and “Polly Wolly Doodles” by the fifth-grade band and “Stodola Pumpa,” “Bingo” and “My Old Kentucky Home” by the sixth-graders.
