Students learn financial strategies to save, spend, share

As part of their financial literacy unit, Holyoke fourth graders learned how to save a little, spend a little and share a little.

Students were taught to prioritize their money and pay for their needs first in the unit that is part of the social studies standards.

As an activity in the unit — which was started prior to school closures due to the pandemic — students made piggy banks to save their money.

The top three winners from both fourth grade classes in the piggy bank contest were recognized last week with prizes provided by First Pioneer National Bank.

Winners in 4A were the underwater world by Emiliano Susano Trujano, first; sundae by Aubrey Bieber, second; and blue bus by Camila Martinez Reyes, third.

Winners in 4B were the grain bin by Emma Benson, first; star destroyer by Andres Bencomo, second; and Lightning McQueen by Justice Montgomery, third.

Because of Colorado’s Safer at Home guidelines, only the winners were in attendance to receive their awards. Other fourth graders can go to the bank’s drive-up window to get their prizes.
