Slaten Burris

Students of the Month

Students of the month for February at Holyoke JR/SR High School have been named. They are eighth-grader Evelyn Espinoza, nominated by business teacher Lori Nelson; and freshman Slaten Burris, nominated by science teacher Ashley Clayton.

Espinoza’s nomination letter read, “I would like to recommend Evelyn Espinoza for Student of the Month. Evelyn strives to complete all of her work on time and do well. Evelyn takes her assignments with the seriousness they should be taken, is not afraid to ask questions and helps those around her. She is an inspiration for others, as they can see how hard work pays off. Evelyn has come so far since the beginning of the year and I feel should be rewarded for all of her effort. She was a finalist this year to get ‘the job’ in her mock interview with Mr. McCleary because of her hard work and good attitude. I am so proud of Evelyn; she is a joy to have in my class.”

Burris’ nomination letter read, “Oftentimes, a leader is not always the loudest voice in the room, but rather the person who chooses to lead by their actions. Slaten Burris embodies what it means to RISE to Excellence on a daily basis as he chooses to lead his peers by example. As a student, Slaten always has his work done on time, and it is obvious that he is very thorough in everything he does.

“These are great characteristics to have — however, what pushes Slaten above and beyond is the kindness he has shown toward another student in class. He always makes sure that this student has a partner when we are doing labs and playing review games. More importantly, he works to ensure that this student feels a part of the group, and he provides meaningful tasks for the student to complete that are fitting for the student’s ability level. As a result of Slaten’s care, this student has grown exponentially both socially and academically. And, for his kindness and willingness to include this student, I feel that Slaten is a shining example of RISE to Excellence and a great candidate for Student of the Month.”
