Students of the Month

Students of the month for February at Holyoke JR/SR High School have been named. They are senior Angel Carrasco Ortiz, nominated by alternative school director Mrs. Beavers and counselor Mrs. Clayton, and eighth grader Riley Powell, nominated by ag teacher Mrs. Strecker.

The nomination letter for Carrasco Ortiz said, “I have been seeing model behavior in this student this year and felt I must nominate him for student of the month. Angel Carrasco Ortiz is a great role model in my classroom for younger students and fellow classmates. His sense of humor puts them at ease and welcomes them into group activities. Angel has also taken the time to befriend a shy student who didn’t talk much to others. Because of Angel, this student now talks to everyone in that class and shares his humor with the class. Angel shows kindness, respect and compassion to others around him. His kind heart isn’t something he would want me to brag on, but he has the biggest heart for others. Please consider him for student of the month.”

Powell’s nomination letter said, “Riley Powell is a good student he helps others out and is a very kind person. I think you should nominate him for is kindness and responsibility.

Riley serves as a positive role model for many of his classmates and friends. In this role, he models what it means to step up and help anyone in need. He is willing to lend a listening ear to a friend in need or step up to help a school staff member who needs an extra hand. Most recently, Riley spent several hours helping with the FFA/FCCLA service sale even though he is an 8th grader and not a member of either one of these organizations. Rather, Riley simply saw a need and stepped in to fill that need. Based on this example and numerous others, Riley Powell is a deserving candidate for student of the month.”
